Norfolk, Va. (Feb 12th) --- The Delaware State Lady Hornets fell to the Norfolk State Spartans 72-50, Monday evening at Echols Hall.
Norfolk State opened the first quarter on a 16-6 run. The Lady Hornets ended the run after Syonah Williams grabbed an offensive rebound and found Keke Barber for a three pointer, with 3:39 left in the quarter.
The Spartans responded by outscoring the Lady Hornets 7-2 through the rest of the quarter and led 23-11, heading into the second period of play.
The Lady Hornets defense responded by holding the Spartans to 11 points in the second quarter, However DSU only scored six points and trailed 34-17, heading into halftime.
Delaware State shot just 21 percent from the floor in the first half.
The Lady Hornets offense was better in the second half, NaJai Pollard was a big reason for that. She shook off her slow start, by scoring 12 of the Lady Hornets 16 points in the third quarter.
However, Delaware State was unable to make any ground on Norfolk State, as the Spartans scored 20 points and led 54-33 heading into the final quarter of regulation.
The Spartans led by as many as 24 points in the fourth quarter.
Delaware State shot 19-of-67 (28.4%) from the field and 2-of-15 (13.3%) on three-point attempts.
NaJai Pollard scored 21 points (19 in the second half) and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Lady Hornets.
Lanayjha Ashe added 14 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Norfolk State made 26-of-63 (41.3%) field goal attempts and 6-of-24 (25.0%) from beyond-the-arc.
Alexys Long led two Spartans in double figures with 22 points.
