Dover, Del. (Mar. 3, 2017) --- The Delaware State women’s basketball team is seeded 12th in the 2017 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament next week in Norfolk, Va.
The Lady Hornets will face No. 5 seed Norfolk State in an opening round contest on Mon. (Mar. 6) at 1 p.m. at the Norfolk Scope Arena.
The teams met once during the 2016-17 regular season. The Lady Spartans won the contest 82-74 on Jan. 16 at DSU’s Memorial Hall.
The Lady Hornets led by as many as seven in the first half, but trailed 47-33 at the break in the regular season meeting. Delaware State put on a late charge after trailing by 24 in the second half, but it was not enough.
NaJai Pollard and Mikah Aldridge led the Lady Hornets with 21 points each, while Kayla Roberts (21) and Khalilah Ali (20) were the top scorers for Norfolk State in the regular season meeting between the teams.
Delaware State and Norfolk State last met in the MEAC in 2015. The Lady Spartans came out on top 70-45 in the opening round contest.
The winner of the Delaware State/Norfolk State contest will face either Florida A&M or South Carolina State in the tournament quarterfinals on Thursday (Mar. 9) at 2 p.m.
Regular season champ Bethune-Cookman is the No. 1 MEAC Tournament seed. Howard, Hampton and Florida A&M round out the top four seeds.
The MEAC women’s championship game is set for Sat. (Mar. 11) at 3 p.m. The contest will air live on ESPN3 and broadcast via tape delay on ESPNU.
The Lady Hornets won their lone MEAC Tournament championship in 2007. DSU also made championship game appearances in 1989, 1990, 2003, 2004 and 2006.
