Pittsburgh, Pa. (Feb. 8, 2009) --- The Delaware State University wrestling team posted a 2-4 overall record to finish fifth in the 2009 NCAA East Region Duals this weekend. DSU’s final record included results from two matches earlier in the season, a win over Wagner (35-9) and a loss to Millersville (25-18) on November 19.

Liberty University posted a 5-1 record to capture the 2009 East Region title.

The Hornets were 1-3 this weekend, defeating Duquesne (27-19), while falling to Gardner-Webb (20-19), Campbell (25-12) and Liberty (33-15).

In the Duquesne contest, the Hornets won seven of the nine contested matches, including three by fall. Matt Cathell improved to 11-0 on the season with a win by fall over the Dukes’ Tony Lascari (1:51) at 149. DSU’s Harry Broomall (133) and Shawn Nowrey (197) also won by fall. Broomall pinned Duquesne’s Taylor Wilde 2:06 into the 133-pound match, while Nowrey needed 2:12 to pin Alex Kneisly at 197.

Garner-Webb needed a victory in the final match to slip by the Hornets. DSU led 19-17, but GW’s Dustin Porter defeat Jamar Becket 7-2 in the heavyweight contest to give the Bulldogs the 20-19 victory. Broomall (133), Cathell (149), Gardner (157) and Kyle Skinner (174) each won by decision in the match.

The Hornets won four weight classes in the loss to Campbell. Cathell earned an 8-4 victory over Joel Caudill at 149, while Garner posted a 13-6 win over Jake Fose in the 157-pound match. Eric Sewell (Hwt.) and Skinner also won by decision for the Hornets.

In the loss to Liberty, Gardner improved to 4-0 for the weekend with a 7-6 overtime win at 157. The Hornets were forced to forfeit the 141 and 149-pound matches. DSU also lost six points due to an injury default at 197.

Cathell, No. 9 in the latest 149-pound national rankings, was 3-0 this weekend to improve to 13-0 on the season.

The Hornets are now 4-11 in dual meets during the 2008-09 campaign.
