Dover (Jan. 7, 2009) --- The Delaware State wrestling team picked up its third dual meet win of the season, topping Virginia Military (VMI) 25-21 in Memorial Hall on Wednesday. The Hornets came up short in their bid for a sweep, dropping a 31-15 contest to South Dakota State later in the day.
In the VMI match, Delaware State won six of the last seven weight classes after falling behind 15-0. Matt Cathell, No. 9 in the latest InterMat/National Wrestling Coaches Association Division I rankings, started the comeback with a win by fall over VMI’s Joel Hutchins (4:38) in the 149-pound match.
Brandon Gardner, Brandon Bruce and Kyle Skinner followed with victories to give the Hornets a 16-15 lead. Gardner defeated Matt Brock 7-2 at 157. Bruce earned four points for DSU with a 13-2 victory over Vinne Gallo at 165 and Skinner recorded a 10-4 win over Andre Szymborksi at 174.
VMI regained the lead, 21-16, after a forfeit win at 184.
Shawn Nowrey put the Hornets back out in front, 22- 21, after winning by fall over Ronald Ellsworth (2:59) at 197. Jamar Beckett sealed the win for Delaware State with a 6-4 victory over Josh Wine in the 285-pound contest.
In the South Dakota State contest, the Jackrabbits won the last three weight classes after the Hornets evened the match at 15 following victories by Cathell, Gardner and Skinner. Cathell improved to 10-0 on the season after a 12-6 win over Adam Everson at 149, while Gardner posted a 7-2 victory over Weston Blasius at 157. Skinner defeated South Dakota State’s Justin Retallc at 174.
The Hornets are 3-8 in dual meets this season.
Earlier Wednesday, South Dakota State defeated VMI 33-9 in Memorial Hall.
