SAT., SEP. 17, 2011 - 6:00 P.M.
DELAWARE STATE (22,000) 0- NEWARK, DEL.
First State bragging rights are on the line as the Hornets visit the University of Delaware in the third meeting between the state's two Division I teams. Delaware State is 2-0 for the first time since 2007 after a wild 31-27 victory over Division II Shaw in its last outing. The Hornets scored the game-winning touchdown on a 13-yard pass from Nick Elko to Darius Jackson in a driving rain storm with 35 seconds left to play. Delaware State recovered a Shaw fumble with 49 seconds left to set up the winning score. The Hornets trailed by 18 points in the second half before storming back.
Delaware, ranked seventh in the latest SportsNetwork and ESPN FCS polls, is 1-1 this season after a 28-17 win over Division II West Chester last Saturday. The Hens led 21-0 early in the game, but the Rams scored 17 unanswered points to pull to within 21-17 in the fourth quarter. Delaware added a fourth quarter touchdown on a 44-yard run by All-America candidate Andrew Pierce to secure the win. Pierce rushed for 153 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries in the contest.
This will be the third meeting between the First State rivals. Delaware won the first contest 44-7 in the opening round of the 2007 FCS playoffs at Delaware Stadium. Omar Cuff rushed for 288 yards and four touchdowns and current Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco passed for 189 yards and a score to lead the Hens in the historic first-ever meeting between the teams. The Hornets and Hens met for the first time in the regular season in 2009, also at Delaware Stadium. The Hornets hung tough for three quarters before falling 27-17. Delaware led 7-3 when DSU put up a goal line stand as time expired in the first half to stay close at intermission. Each team racked up 343 yards of total offense in the contest.
