Norfolk, Va. (July 26, 2019) --- Delaware State is not given much chance in the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference football race, according to a poll of league head coaches and sports information directors announced at the league’s annual kickoff luncheon today.

The Hornets have been picked by voters to finish last in the nine-team race. North Carolina A&T is the overwhelming favorite to capture its third straight MEAC title. Rounding out the top five in the poll is Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M, Howard and North Carolina Central.

The winner of the MEAC championship earns a bid to the Celebration Bowl to compete against the champion of the Southwestern Athletic Conference on Dec. 21 in Atlanta, Ga.

“Preseason polls are good for conversation and help generate interest in the season, but they mean very little," said DSU second-year head coach Rod Milstead. “We can determine our own destiny by working to get better every day.”

Milstead added, “No one is surprised that North Carolina A&T is predicted to repeat as conference champs.  The Aggies are certainly the team to beat in the league this year. There are some very good teams in the MEAC this season, and each week will be a challenge."

DSU will kick off the new season on Aug. 29 at the University of Delaware. The Hornets’ 2019 home opener is Sep. 14 against Lincoln University (Pa.). The MEAC opener is Sep. 21 against Howard in the annual homecoming contest. For ticket information, call 302-857-7497.
