Delaware State visits Morgan State in a MEAC contest between teams in need of a
turnaround. The Hornets bring a three-game losing streak into the game. DSU is coming off a 38-24 MEAC loss to South Carolina State last Saturday. The Hornets never recovered after falling behind 17-0. After a slow start, Delaware State quarterback Tylik Bethea (fr.) passed for a career-high 198 yards in last week’s contest. Morgan State is seeking its first win of the season. The Bears dropped their fifth straight game last week, falling to Bethune-Cookman 31-20 on the road. MSU’s Josh Chase rushed for a game-high 124 yards on 25 attempts in the contest.
Freshman quarterback Tylik Bethea has started the last four games. Bethea enters the weekend ranked seventh in the MEAC in passing average at 141.6 yards per game and10th in the league in pass efficiency with a 97.8 passer rating. For the season, the rookie signal-caller has completed 63-of-136 passes (46.3%) for 708 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions. He was selected as the MEAC Rookie-of-the-Week after completing 16-of-28 passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns in the Hornets’ 58-12 win over Lincoln (Pa.) on Sep. 8. Bryant Dallas (sr.) is DSU’s top rusher with 198 yards (39.6 ypg). Wide receiver Kwannah Kollie (jr.) has emerged as one of the MEAC’s top pass catchers this season. Kollie is fourth in the league in receptions (4.8 pg), seventh in receiving yards (61.6 ypg) and tied for first in touchdown catches (4). Wide receiver Bizzett Woodley (fr.) has two touchdown grabs this season. Defensively, Delaware State is allowing 351.4 yards per game to rank fourth in the MEAC.
Linebacker Brian Cavicante (sr.) is tops on the team and ninth in the MEAC in tackles at 7.2 per game (29 total). Defensive back Jahad Niebauer (sr.) is tied for 20th in the league in tackles at 5.6 per game (28 total). The Hornet defense also includes two of the MEAC’s top 10 sack leaders. Brandon Carswell (gr.) has three sacks to tie for fourth in the MEAC at 0.5 per contest, while Christian Johnson (gr.) has two sacks in the Hornets’ five games to stand at 10th in the league (0.67 pg). Morgan State ia averaging 284.0 yards per game, 121.8 on the ground and 162.2 by the pass. Quarterback DeAndre Harris (sr.) is sixth in the MEAC in passing average (63.5 ypg) and passing efficiency (119.3 rating). Josh Chase is the team leader with 221 yards rushing, including 124 vs. Bethune-Cookman last week. He’s averaging 4.9 yards per carry. Manesseh Bailey (sr.) is tops on the team and fifth in the MEAC in receiving yards (75.8 ypg), while standing eighth in receptions ( 3.8 pg). Defensively, the Bears are allowing 491.2 yards per game, including a league-high 308.4 by the run. Morgan State linebacker Rico Kennedy (sr.) is tops in the MEAC in tackles at 10.4 per game (52 total). Kennedy is also No. 1 in the conference with 10.5 tackles for loss. Ian McBorrough (sr.) is tied for third in the league in tackles at 8.6 per game (43).
THE SERIES (MSU leads 37-25)
This is the 63rd meeting between the Hornets and Bears. It is Delaware State‘s second oldest rivalry (75 games vs. Howard). Morgan State has won five of the last six games in the series, including a 9-0 victory in Baltimore in 2018. The Hornets have dropped four straight games at Morgan State since a 28-23 victory in Hughes Stadium in 2012.
