Dover, Del. (Feb. 6, 2019) --- Delaware State Head Football Coach Rod Milstead has announced that eight high school seniors and three junior college transfer have signed the National Letter of Intent to attend the University and compete for the Hornets beginning in this year.

Three offensive linemen, two linebackers, two wide receivers, a quarterback, defensive lineman, tight end and athlete signed scholarship offers from the Hornets today.

Two Delaware high school products, wide receiver Esaias Guthrie of Middletown and Hodgson Vo-Tech linebacker / long snapper Brandon Shimko are among the newest Hornets.

“I believe we addressed one of our major needs by adding depth to our offensive line,” said Milstead, a former Delaware State and National Football League offensive lineman. “On the defensive side, we signed some help for our linebacker corps and the front line.”

The Hornets have also signed incoming freshman quarterback Jabari Blake (6-4, 195) of Lynchburg, Va., who combined for 5038 passing yards, 2,123 rushing yards and 87 touchdowns during scholastic career

Blake is expected to contend with returning letterman Shayne Smith (r-jr.) and December 2018 signee Tylik Bethea (fr.) for the starting QB job this season. Bethea (6-5, 195) completed 132-of-224 passes (58.9%) for 1,500 yards with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions as a senior at Brooklyn’s Abraham Lincoln High School in 2018.

“I’m extremely pleased with the quality of players who have committed to be a part of our program,” said Milstead. ““The young men we have signed for next season are good athletes with the potential contribute right away. I’m equally impressed with the character and academic credentials of these young men. Each should be a good fit for the team and the university.”
