(Dover, Del.) -- The Delaware State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics held its annual DESPYs Award ceremony (#DESPYs16) this past Monday night, honoring its student-athletes, administration, support staff and coaches for the 2015-16 season.

Headlining the night was the Hornet bowling squad, garnering Head Coach of the Year (Elysia Current) and Women’s Student Athlete of the Year (Stephanie Sheridan).  These honors only added to an already superb 2016 season for the ladies, as the team was crowned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament champions earlier this month.

Senior Nicole Gazzola – a two-sport standout in softball and cross country – received the Softball Excellence Award, in addition to winning the Highest Female Student-Athlete Grade-Point Average honor.  Freshman Devin Morgan – the MEAC Rookie of the Year Award winner - garnered Male Student-Athlete of the Year and men’s basketball Player of the Year honors.

To round out the night, longtime senior football administrative assistant/travel coordinator Edna Piper was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award.  Better known as “Miss P”, she has been an iatrical part in the day-to-day operation duties of the Hornet football program for nearly 20 years.
