Delaware State Head Coach Eric Skeeters (Coppin State, ‘97): 5-24 at DSU and career (first season);
2-14 in MEAC regular season; 0-1 vs. Savannah State; 0-0 MEAC Tournament
Delaware State (5-24; 2-14 MEAC) tips off the 2019 MEAC Men’s Basketball Tournament with an opening round contest against Savannah State. The Hornets dropped their last three regular season games to finish last in the final 2018-19 MEAC standings. Kevin Larkin (gr.), an All-MEAC Third Team selection, is tops on the Hornets and fourth in the MEAC in scoring at 15.9 points per game, and is second in the league in rebounding at 9.0 per game. In addition, he is tied for second in the conference with 11 “double-doubles” this season. On Dec. 3, 2018 vs. Cairn, Larkin scored a career-high 40 points, the top single-game total in the MEAC this season. He also had 11 rebounds, six assists and four steals to lead the Hornets to a 102-66 victory in that contest. Larkin has reached double-figures in scoring in 20 of the 24 games in which he has competed, topping the 20-point mark five times. DSU forward Saliek Edwards (sr.) is second on the Hornets in scoring at 10.2 points per game. He’s also the team leader with 61 three-point field goals to rank seventh in the league at 2.3 per game. Hornet point guard Pinky Wiley is DSU’s third-leading scorer at 9.8 points per game and is number one in the MEAC’s in steals at 2.1 per game. He also ranks fourth in the MEAC at 4.4 assists per contest.
Savannah State (11-19; 8-8 MEAC) won its regular season finale 90-87 over South Carolina to snap a three-game losing streak and clinch sixth place in the final 2018-19 MEAC season standings. Jaquan Dotson led the Tigers with 25 points on nine-of-11 shooting from the field in the SC State contest. Dotson is the team leader and 12th in the MEAC in scoring at 12.4 points per game. Savannah State is second in the MEAC in scoring (76.4 ppg) and No. 1 i/n the league in three-point field goals (11.4 pg).
HORNETS vs. Tigers Series History (SSU leads 5-2)
This is the second meeting between the Hornets and Tigers this season and third MEAC Tournament contest between the teams. Savannah State won the 2018-19 regular season meeting 76-73 on Feb. 2, 2019 in Dover, Del. Joseph Collins led three Savannah State double-figure scorers with 17 points, highlighted by three three-point field goals. Zaquavian Smith came off the bench to add 15 points for the Tigers. He also nailed three three-pointers in the game. Ameer Bennett led Delaware State with a career-high 19 points (7-for-10 FGs) in the regular season contest against Savannah State. Kevin Larkin added 13 points and 11 rebounds in the regular season meeting between the teams. This will be the third MEAC Tournament meeting between the Hornets and Tigers. Delaware State won the first meeting 64-58 in 2015. The Hornets advanced to the tournament championship game that season.
Savannah State won the second MEAC Tournament meeting between the teams 63-58 in 2016.
