THE GAME Delaware State (2-16; 0-3 MEAC) hits the road for the next two games, beginning with a visit to Hampton. The Hornets are looking to snap a 12-game losing streak. DSU is coming off a 76-66 loss to North Carolina A&T in a MEAC contest last Monday. The Hornets were frustrated in the final seven-and-a-half minutes of the contest. Delaware State was outscored 18-8 down the stretch to suffer its third loss in three league games this season. The loss overshadowed a stellar performance by DSU senior Artem Tavakalyan, who led all players with a career-best 23 points, also the high for a Hornet this season. Tavakalyan was 8-for-11 from the field, including 5-of-6 from three-point range in the contest. His previous career high was 20 points vs. East Carolina this season. Kavon Waller and Joseph Lewis added eight points each, while Pinky Wiley had seven points and a team-high six assists in the contest for the Hornets. Delaware State was outrebounded 28-25 and also plagued by 19 turnovers in the game. For the season, Tavakalyan is tops on the Hornets in scoring (10.8 ppg) and, second in rebounding (4.9 pg) and three-point field goals (23). Center Simon Okolue is second on the team in scoring (10.5 ppg), and tops in rebounding (6.8 pg), blocks (17) and field goal percentage (.568). Wiley averages 8.7 points and leads the team with 43 assists.
Hampton (5-11; 0-1 MEAC) is trying to snap a three-game slide. In their most recent outing, the Pirates suffered a 92-83 loss to UMES in their MEAC opener last Saturday. Jermaine Marrow led four Hampton players in double figures with 19 points in the contest. Malique Trent-Street scored 15 points and dished out a game-high 10 assists. Marrow, a Preseason All-MEAC Second Team selection, is tops on the Pirates and fourth in the league in scoring at 18.7 points per game. He’s also No. 2 in the conference in assists at 5.8 per game. In addition, Marrow leads the team with 20 three-point field goals.
HORNETS vs. PIRATES SERIES HISTORY (Series tied 27-27 since 1967-68 seaaon)
This is the only scheduled meeting between the teams this season. Hampton won the only 2016-17 meeting 85-77 in overtime at Delaware State’s Memorial Hall. The Hornets led 58-48 with seven-and-a-half minutes left in the second half before the Pirates stormed back. Hampton has won the last four meetings between the teams.
