After a roller coaster regular season, the Hornets (10-21; 7-9 MEAC) are the eighth seed in the 2017 MEAC Tournament. Delaware State has played well enough at times this season to defeat St. John’s of the Big East and post MEAC road wins against regular season champ North Carolina Central and Morgan State. On the other hand, the Hornets were just 4-7 at the home this season (2-6 vs. MEAC opponents). Delaware State ended the regular season with a 66-56 win at home against Howard on Mar. 2. DeAndre Haywood led all players with 20 points in the contest, while DeVaughn Mallory recorded his second double-double of the season, tallying 10 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Hornets. Sophomore guard Devin Morgan, a 2016-17 All-MEAC Third Team selection, is DSU’s leading scorer this season at 14.7 points per game to rank 13th in the MEAC. Morgan is also among the MEAC leaders in assists and three-point field goals. Haywood is second on the Hornets with an 11.4 point per game average, while Mallory averages 10.2 points per game and is second in the MEAC with a .571 field goal percentage.
Bethune-Cookman (9-21; 6-10 MEAC), enters the MEAC Tournament with wins in two straight and four of its last five games. The Wildcats closed out the regular season with a 69-59 victory over Florida A&M last Thursday. Reggie Baker led three BCU players in double figures with 20 points, highlighted by six three-point field goals. Brandon Tabb added 12 points and Quinton Forest 10 (5-6 FGs) in the Wildcats’ regular season finale.
Tabb is a 2016-17 All-MEAC Second Team pick.
