Norfolk, Va. (Apr. 27, 2019) --- Garrett Lawson tossed a three-hit shutout, while Jared Gillis had five hits and Rich Rountree smacked a grand slam to lead Delaware State a 14-0 victory over Norfolk State in game one of a MEAC North doubleheader today. The Spartans bounced back for a 4-2 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, Lawson scattered three singles and struck out seven without allowing a walk to improve to 7-3 this season. The shutout was his second of the season and his strikeout total stands at 88 to go along with just 27 walks.

Gillis was five-for-five with a double and set career-highs for hits and RBI in a game. Rountree’s slam, the first homer of his collegiate career, highlighted the Hornets’ six-run sixth-inning.

Gillis singled in the game’s first run in the bottom of the first inning. He also had a run-scoring single in the Hornets’ four-run second inning. Mark Herron and John Weglarz also singled in runs in the DSU second.

The Hornets scored three runs in the fourth inning to open up an 8-0 lead. Adrian Hull doubled in the first run of the inning, while Gillis drove in his third run of the game on a two-out single in the fourth. Miguel Rivera also single in a fourth-inning run.

In the Delaware State sixth, John Weglarz walked with one out and Rivera followed with a single to put runners at second and first. Gillis then singled to right to score Weglarz for his fourth RBI of the game and give the Hornets a 9-0 lead. After a walk to Cole Garey loaded the bases, Rountree homered down the right field line to clear the bases with DSU’s first grand slam since Ciaran Devenney and Jaylen Zielecki each  hit one in a 19-5 victory over Coppin State on Apr. 8, 2017.

Herron was three-for-three with a run batted in and Rivera had three hits and drove in a run in four at bats in the opener.

The Hornets had 16 hits in the game, their second-highest total of the season.

In the nightcap, Norfolk State starter Ridge Walker threw seven solid innings, allowing four hits and two runs, to earn the win. Stephen Baughan was four-for-four at the plate to highlight the Spartans’ 11-hit attack.

Delaware State trailed 1-0 before scoring single runs in the second and third innings to open up a 2-1 lead.

Alex Vasquez singled in the Hornets’ second inning run to tie the game at 1-1, while Gillis’ third inning single gave DSU a one-run lead. Gillis was one for three in game two to give him six hits and five RBI in eight at bats in the doubleheader.

The Hornets had just two hits the rest of the way.

Norfolk State opened up a 3-2 lead on a fifth inning double by shortstop Trent Hanchey.

DSU starter Sean McGrath took the loss. He was touched for 10 hits and all four Norfolk State runs in 6.1 innings.

The Hornets and Spartans will close out the series with a single game on Sunday. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at NSU’s Marty Miller Field.
