Hanover, Md. (Apr. 13, 2019) --- Carlos Alvarez drove in four runs and Drew Thomas hit a home run to lead MEAC North leader Coppin State to a 14-4 victory over Delaware State today.
The Eagles tallied 15 hits off six Hornet pitchers in the contest.
Coppin State opened the scoring with three runs in the third inning off DSU starter Sean McGrath. Alvarez singled in his first of the game in the inning.
The Hornets (11-19; 6-8 MEAC) tied the game with three runs in the top fourth inning. Miguel Rivera singled to lead off the inning and scored on a singled by Jared Gillis for DSU’s first run. Todd Henry tripled in Gillis to cut the Eagles’ lead to 3-2. The Hornets tied the game when Henry crossed the plate on a Coppin State error.
The Eagles regained the lead with three runs in the fifth. Alvarez doubled in the first run of the inning and Thomas smacked a two-run homer to give CSU a 6-3 lead.
Coppin State (17-14; 10-4 MEAC) padded its lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. The big blow in the inning was three-run triple by Alvarez.
The Eagles led 9-4 before five runs in the bottom of the seventh. The game was called after Conner Walker singled in Coppin State’s 14th run due to the MEAC’s 10-run rule.
Gillis, Henry and John Weglarz had three hits each for the Hornets.
Austin Warrington (1-4), DSU’s second pitcher of the day, was tagged with the loss.
Coppin State starter Aaron Rea (4-2) pitched six innings to earn the win.
The teams will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
