Dover, Del. (Apr. 7, 2019) --- Norfolk State trailed 3-1 before scoring eight unanswered runs to defeat Delaware State 9-3 in the rubber game of a MEAC North baseball series at Soldier Field.
The Spartans won two of the three series game to improve to 11-17 overall and 7-5 in the MEAC. The Hornets fell to 10-17 and 5-7.
Norfolk State scored six runs in the eighth to pull ahead 7-3, and added two runs in the ninth to close out the scoring.
The NSU comeback overshadowed a solid pitching performance by Delaware State starter Darnell Maisonet, who allowed five hits and one run, while striking out five and walking one before leaving the game with the Hornets ahead 3-1.
Norfolk State starter Jonathan Mahoney was the winning pitcher. He allowed seven hits and three runs, while striking out 11.
The Spartans opened the scoring with a run in the third on a one-out single by Caleb Ward.
Delaware State tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out single by catcher Adrian Hill. The Hornets loaded the bases after the Hill single, but failed to add any more runs.
The Hornets opened up a 2-1 lead when Tommy Jordan doubled to lead off the fifth inning and scored on a one-out double by Miguel Rivera.
Delaware State pulled ahead 3-1 after back-to-back two-out doubles by Todd Henry and Mark Herron in the sixth.
Norfolk State scored all of its eighth inning runs off Hornet freshman reliever Jeremy Carrow. The score was 3-3 in the eighth when Korey Singh doubled in two runs off Carrow to give the Spartans the lead for good.
The Hornets return to action with a single game at the University of Delaware on Tues. (Apr. 9). Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Bob Hannah Stadium in Newark.
DSU’s next MEAC series is Apr. 12-14 vs. Coppin State in Hanover, Md.
