Dover, Del. (Apr. 4, 2019) --- The Delaware State baseball team will welcome Norfolk State to Soldier Field for a key MEAC North series this weekend. Friday's scheduled opener has been postponed. The Hornets and Spartans are now scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday (Apr. 6) beginning at 12:00 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. on the DSU campus.
Norfolk State is currently second in the 2019 MEAC North standings with a 5-4 division record, while Delaware State is third at 4-5. Coppin State leads the race with a 7-2 mark.
DSU is coming off a three-game sweep at Maryland-Eastern Shore last weekend.
The Hornets are trying to avenge a three-game sweep at the hands of NSU when the teams met Mar. 15-17 in Virginia. Delaware State led 5-3 in the series opener before the Spartans scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning in their 8-5 win. Norfolk State won 7-2 and 9-0 in the next two games.
Reigning MEAC Pitcher of the Week Garrett Lawson (jr.) is expected to start the series opener for the Hornets this weekend. Lawson is 4-2 overall with a 2.12 earned run average this season. Since MEAC play began, he is 2-0 with a 1.21 ERA. Also this season, Lawson is tied for second in the league in wins (4) and third in strikeouts per game (9.96) and total strikeouts (53).
He threw the first seven innings, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned), while striking out seven and walking two in a no-decision performance at Norfolk State on Mar. 15.
Miguel Rivera (so.) is Delaware State’s top hitter with a .351 average in 17 games. Todd Henry (sr.) leads the Hornets with two home runs, while Jared Gillis (jr.) has a team-high 15 runs batted in.
The Hornets are expected to be bolstered by the return of outfielder and starting pitcher Darnell Maisonet, a Preseason All-MEAC Second Team selection, who has appeared in just eight games this season due to injury.
