Norfolk, Va. (Apr. 29, 2017) --- Delaware State scored three runs in the 10th inning and Darrien Ragins recorded his school-record ninth save in the Hornets' 4-2 victory over Norfolk State in game two of a MEAC North doubleheader at Marty Miller Field today. DSU's game two win prevented Norfolk State from clinching its third straight division title.
The Spartans won today's opener 5-0 on a one-hit shutout by Devin Hemmerich.
The score was 1-1 in the 10th inning of the scheduled seven-inning nightcap, when Tommie Collins singled in pinch runner Rich Rountree with two outs to give the Hornets a 2-1 lead. Rountree was running for Tyler Collins, who singled with two outs and the bases empty to start the rally.
Kwestin Smith and Jake Bartlett added run-scoring singles later in the 10th to stretch DSU's lead to 4-1.
Ragins allowed a run in the bottom of the 10th, but retired the Spartans without allowing any further damage to record his MEAC-leading eighth save of the season.
Collins singled in the game's first run in the fifth inning. He was 2-for-4 in his Hornet debut.
Norfolk State tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
In the opener, Hemmerich only a allowed a fourth inning single by Evan Regez to post his third win of the season against the Hornets.
Alex Mauricio and Andre Moore each had two hits and a RBI to lead Norfolk State's 12-hit attack in the opener.
The Hornets and Spartans will wrap up their season series with a single game on Sunday. Norfolk State needs one win in its last five division games to capture the 2017 MEAC North title.
