Hanover, Md. (Apr. 15, 2-17) --- Delaware State out 15 hits in the opener and used solid pitching in game two to sweep Coppin State in a MEAC doubleheader today. The Hornets won the first game 13-6 and completed the sweep with a 5-3 victory in the nightcap. DSU won two of the three series game to draw even with the Eagles at 3-3 in head-to-head contests this season.
Jaylen Zielecki was 3-for-6 with two triples and four runs batted in, while Jared Gillis had a home run and three RBI to lead the Hornets’ game one attack.
Also, DSU’s Ciaran Devenney had three hits and a RBI and Evan Regez drove in two.
The Hornets opened the scoring with three runs in the first. Jaylen triple in his fist run of the game in the inning. Delaware State opened up a 4-0 lead on a one-out solo homer by Gillis, his third of the year.
DSU led 5-3 before scoring six runs in the seventh inning to blow the game open. Zielecki’s three-run triple was the big blow in the inning.
Hornet starter Garrett Lawson was the game one winner. Lawson went seven innings, allowing four hits and three runs, while striking out six.
In the nightcap, Sean McGrath threw 5.2 inning to earn his second win (2-3), while Darrien Ragins threw 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to collect his fifth save. Ragins struck out three of the six batters he faced.
Delaware State trailed 1-0 before scoring three in the second to take lead. Two runs scored on wild pitches and the third run of the inning crossed the plate on a sac fly by Tommie Jordan.
The Hornets scored a run on a groundout in the fifth and another on a Coppin State error in the sixth.
Regez, Todd Henry and Darnel Maisonet had two hits each for Delaware State in game two.
The doubleheader sweep give the Hornets an 11-19 overall record and a 7-8 mark in the MEAC. Coppin State fell to 8-22 and 6-9.
Delaware State returns to action with a non-conference game at Fairleigh Dickinson on Tues. Game time is 3:30 p.m. in Teaneck, N.J.
