Hanover, Md. (Apr. 14, 2017) --- Coppin State broke open a close game with four runs in the eighth inning to defeat Delaware State 8-3 in a MEAC North contest at Joe Cannon Stadium today.

DSU has dropped its last four games to fall to 9-18 overall and 5-8 in the MEAC. Coppin State is 8-20 and 6-7.

The Hornets trailed 4-3 before Coppin State’s eighth inning rally. The big hit in the inning was a two-out two-run single by John Bonanca to give the Eagles an five-run lead.

Delaware State opened the scoring with a run on two Coppin State errors in the top of the first inning.

The Eagles scored three runs in the bottom of the second, aided by two Delaware State errors, to take the lead.

The Hornets put two runs on the board in the third to tie the game.  Devin Beverly and Tommie Jordan singled to lead off the Delaware State third. Beverly scored on a passed ball and Evan Regez singled in Jordan with the tying run.

Coppin State regained the lead 4-3 on a one-out single by Allen Saar in the fifth.

Delaware State starter Lane DeLeon (1-3) was the tough-luck loser in the contest. He allowed eight hits and four runs (two earned), while striking out seven without a walk in seven innings.

Regez had three of Delaware State’s seven hits to raise his season average to .357. He has hit safely in 11 of the last 12 games.

The Hornets and Eagles will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
