Dover, Del. (Feb. 7, 2019) --- Delaware State’s Darnel Maisonet (sr.; Tall Pines, N.J.) has been named to the 2019 Preseason All-MEAC Baseball Second Team outfield, in voting by league head coaches and sports information representatives announced today.

Maisonet, a 2018 All-MEAC Third Team outfielder, was tops on the Hornets with a .341 batting average vs. MEAC opponents and .303 overall average last season. He was the team leader and tied for 10th in MEAC with five home runs, second on Hornets with 21 runs batted in, while ranking third on the team in runs scored (23) and sixth in hits (36).   

Maisonet also appeared in eight games on the mound, posting a 2-3 overall record and 2.98 earned run average last season.  He was selected as MEAC Pitcher-of-the-Week after striking out 11 in a 3-0 shutout of Maryland-Eastern, and was 2-2 with a 1.93 ERA vs. MEAC opponents in 2018.

North Carolina Central junior Corey Joyce was selected as the 2019 MEAC Baseball Preseason Player of the Year, while and Bethune-Cookman junior Anthony Maldonado was the voters’ choice for Preseason Pitcher of the Year., the conference announced today.

In addition, the MEAC announced the predicted order of finish for the 2019 Northern  and Southern Division baseball races.

Coppin State is the favorite to repeat as Northern Division champs with 13 of 18 first place votes and 66 total points. Last season, the Eagles won their first division title since 1996.   

Delaware State is picked to finish third in the MEAC North race with one first place vote and 33 points.

Defending MEAC Tournament champ  North Carolina A&T is the favorite to win the Southern Division crown.

The Hornets open their 2019 season with a three-game series at The Citadel beginning Feb. 15. 

DSU begins MEAC play on Mar. 15 at Norfolk State.
