Glen Burnie, Md. (Apr. 29, 2018) ---Delaware State scored four runs in the seventh inning to defeat Coppin State 14-12 in the second game of a MEAC North doubleheader at Joe Cannon Stadium today.

The Hornets trailed 12-10 entering their last at bat in seven-inning nightcap. Darryl Wilson reached base on an infield single to start the rally. Adrian Hill followed with a walk to give DSU runners at second and first with none out. Two batters later, pinch hitter Cole Garey doubled to right center, scoring Wilson and Hill to tie the game. Delaware State had runners at third and first when Miguel Rivera delivered with a two-run triple to give the Hornets a 14-12 lead.


DSU’s third pitcher of the game, Juan Sanchez (1-4), retired the Eagles without allowing a run in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win.


Rivera was 3-for-5 with a career-high five RBI in game two. He singled in two runs in the Hornets’ six-run second inning and doubled in a run in the third.

Delaware State scored four runs in the third to open up a 10-3 lead, but Coppin State responded with five runs in the bottom of the third to pull to within two.


The Eagles regained the lead, 12-10, after putting four runs on the board in the fifth.     


Todd Henry had two-run singles in the second and third innings to drive in four runs for the Hornets in the nightcap.


Coppin State won the opener 12-8.


Delaware State led 4-0 in game one before allowing 12 unanswered runs, including seven in the seventh inning.


The Hornets opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. Rivera tripled with one out and Darnell Maisonet followed with a walk to give DSU runners at third and first. Rivera scored the game’s first run on a play where Maisonet was thrown out at second on a pick off.

Delaware State added three runs in the second to open up a 4-0 lead. John Weglarz singled in the first run of the inning and two came home on a Coppin State throwing error.


The Eagles got on the board with two runs in the fourth to cut the Hornets’ lead in half.


Coppin State sent 12 batters to the plate in their seven run seventh inning. Caleb Duhay doubled in two runs and Marcos Castillo singled in two to highlight the Eagles’ rally.


Delaware State scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning, two on a single by Garey, but it was too little too late.


Rivera was 4-or-9 with four runs scored and five RBI in the doubleheader.

The teams combined for 46 runs and 46 hits in the two games.

The Hornets will close out the 2018 regular season with four games at home, beginning with a three-game series at home against Maryland-Eastern Shore on May 5 & 6.
