Dover, Del. (Apr. 8, 2018) --- Miguel Rivera singled in the go-ahead run with two outs in the seventh inning to give Delaware State a 4-3 victory over Norfolk State in the second game of a MEAC North doubleheader at Marty Miller Field today. The victory in the seven-inning nightcap was DSU’s second in the three-game weekend series.

Norfolk State won Sunday’s opener 12-8.

The score was 3-3 in game two when the Hornets came to bat in the seventh inning. John Weglarz doubled off NSU’s Trey Hanchey to lead off the inning. He was still at second with two outs when Rivera singled through the right side off Hanchey to score Weglarz with the go-ahead run.

DSU starting pitcher Darnell Maisonet struck out the first batter he faced in the NSU seventh. The Spartans had the potential tying run on base when Ismael Herrera singled with one out. After Maisonet struck out Mikey Delgado for Norfolk State’s second out of the inning, the Hornet left-hander picked off pinch runner Troy White at first base for the final out of the game.

Maisonet (1-2) allowed five hits and three runs, while striking out five and walking three, to earn the complete game win.

Delaware State scored first in the nightcap with two runs on singles by Adrian Hill and Todd Henry in the second inning.

After Norfolk State tied the game with two runs in the third inning, the Hornets regained the lead with a run in the top of the fourth. Hill tripled with one out and scored on a groundout by Weglarz to account for the Hornets’ fourth inning run.

The Spartans tied the game again with a run in the bottom of the fifth.

Hill and Rich Rountree had two hits each to lead Delaware State’s 10-hit attack in the nightcap.

In the opener, Syeed Mahdi drove in four runs and Tony Leite knocked in three to lead the Spartans. Mahdi had two hits in five at bats, including a three-run homer in the second inning to give NSU a 5-0 lead.

Leite singled in a run in NSU’s two-run first inning and singled in two more to highlight the Spartans’ five-run fifth.

Delaware State trailed 5-0 when freshman Cole Carey smacked his second home run of the season, a three-run shot in the fourth inning. Garey, who was 3-for-5 in the game, drove in a career-high four runs.

Norfolk State answered by scoring the next seven runs to open up a 12-3 lead after six innings.

The Hornets made things interesting with five runs in the seventh. Carey doubled in a run, while Todd Henry had a run-scoring single in the seventh. DSU also scored runs on a balk and Norfolk State error in the inning.

Rivera and Maurice Parsons had two hits each for the Hornets in the opener.

DSU (5-25; 3-9 MEAC) returns to action with a non-conference game at La Salle on Tuesday. Game time is 3:30 p.m. in Philadelphia.

The Hornets are back home next weekend (Apr. 14-15) for a MEAC series against Coppin State.
