Dover, Del. (Mar. 10, 2018) --- The Delaware State baseball team came up short in two seven-inning contests against Fairleigh Dickinson today, falling to the Knights 5-4 and 6-5 at Soldier Field.
In the opener, the Hornets led 4-3 before FDU scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Designated hitter Darnel Maisonet (jr.; Tall Pines, N.J.) smacked a solo home run, his second of the season, while third baseman John Weglarz (fr.; Bear, Del.) was 2-for-2 with a run batted in for the Hornets.
Delaware State starter Lane DeLeon (sr.; Georgetown, Del.) allowed struck out six batters in 3.1 innings but was not involved in the decision. He allowed seven hits and three runs, although two were unearned, while not allowing a walk.
In the nightcap, the Hornets trailed 6-2 before scoring three runs in the sixth to get back into the game. Miguel Rivera (fr.; Dover, Del.) singled in the first run in the DSU sixth and Cole Garey (fr.; Felton, Del.) blasted his first collegiate homer, a two-run shot over the left field fence, to cut FDU’s lead to 6-5.
Still trailing 6-5, the Hornets put their first two batters in base in the bottom of the seventh inning, but failed to score.
Weglarz was 3-for-3 with a run scored in game two, giving him five hits in five at-bats in the doubleheader, and raising his average from .139 to .244 this season.
Delaware State (2-10) and Fairleigh Dickinson (2-4) will wrap up their series with another pair of seven-innings games on Sunday. Game one is set for 12 p.m. at Soldier Field.
