Dover, Del. (Feb. 23, 2018) --- Freshman Miquel Rivera (Dover, Del. ) hit a seeing-eye single up the middle in the bottom of the 10th inning to score the winning run in Delaware State’s 4-3 walk-off victory over Rider in the Hornets’ 2018 home opener at Soldier Field today.

Rider led 3-2 after scoring the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the top of the 10th when DSU came to bat in the bottom of the inning.

Freshman John Weglarz (Bear, Del.) reached base on an error to lead off the Hornet 10th. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Todd Henry (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J.) and moved to third on an infield single by designated hitter Garrett Lawson (so.; Dover, Del.).  The next batter, Jared Gillis (so.; Middletown, Del.) followed with an infield single, moving pinch runner Arthur Burrell (fry; Atlanta, Ga.) to second, although Weglarz stayed at third base on the play. The bases were loaded with one out when Cole Garey (fr.;  Felton, Del.) reached base on a fielder’s choice. Weglarz scored on the play to tie the game at 3-3 and Burrell moved to third. There were two outs when Rivera hit a bouncer past the pitcher and between Rider’s shortstop and second baseman to score Burrell with the winning run.

The Hornets opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Gillis doubled down the right field line to lead off the inning and scored the game’s first run when Garey followed with a double to left. Garey later scored on a sacrifice fly by Tommy Jordan (so.; Milford, Del.) to give DSU a 2-0 lead.

Delaware State starter Lane DeLeon pitched six shutout innings, allowing six hits and striking out seven.
