Dover, Del. (Feb. 22, 2018) --- The Delaware State baseball team begins its 2018 home schedule with a three-game weekend series against Rider at Soldier Field. The series gets underway on Friday (Feb. 23) with a scheduled 2 p.m. contest. The Hornets and Broncs are also scheduled to play single games on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. each day.
Delaware State took one of the three games at Savannah State in its season opening series last weekend.
Among the bright spots in the opening series was the play of freshman second baseman John Weglarz (Bear, Del.), who had a double and three singles in 12 at bats (.333). He also drove in two runs in the Hornets’ 9-3 victory in game two of the series.
Garrett Lawson (so.; Dover, Del.) also batted .333 for the Hornets last weeked, collecting three hits in nine at bats. On the mound, Lawson struck out 8 batters in 4.1 innings, but was tagged in the loss in game three.
Outfielder Jared Gillis (so.; Middletown, Del.) batted .300 in the series, tallying three hits in ten at bats and also drawing three walks.
Starting pitcher Sean McGrath (jr.; Bear, Del.) threw four shutout innings, striking out four, to earn the Hornets’ lone win in their season opening series.
Rider is 2-2 this season. The Broncs split four games with Ohio University in Lexington, S.C., to open their season last weekend.
DSU and Rider are meeting for the fourth straight year. The Broncs have won the previous three games, including an 11-7 victory the last time the teams met at Soldier Field in 2016.
