Dover, Del. (Mar. 30, 2017) --- Five individuals will be honored for their outstanding contributions to women in sports and education at the 2017 Delaware State University Diamond Extravaganza on April 30 at DSU’s Martin Luther King Student Center. The program is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
The honorees are Delawareans or individuals with ties to the First State who were nominated for the honors.
The 2017 Delaware Diamond Extravaganza honorees are:
Mary Pat Kwoka (Veteran high school and club volleyball coach)
Feffie Barnhill (Local high lacrosse coach and former U.S. National Team coach/U.S. Lacrosse)
Candy Young (Former U.S. Olympian and college All-America track & field performer; former DSU Dir. Of Athletics)
Michelle Flanagan (Brandywine High School Cross Country Coach; Delaware Track & Field Hall-of-Fame)
H. Raye Jones Avery (Executive Dir. Christiana Cultural Arts Center)
"Each of these individuals has played significant roles in providing opportunities to women in athletics," said Dr. David Marshall, Delaware Diamond Extravaganza Chairman and DSU Head Women’s Tennis Coach. "It's important that we express our gratitude to these leaders and their inspiration to young women in leadership roles."
The Delaware Diamond Extravaganza began in 2009 as a way to recognize, celebrate and honor individuals in the state of Delaware that have helped women's athletics grow and excel in addition to creating additional scholarship and financial support to aid female athletics programs. The DDE identifies coaches, administrators, athletes and contributors who meet the following criteria:
o Over 10 years commitment to women's athletic programs
o Activist for Title IX and gender equity
o Enhanced life skills knowledge through women's athletics
o Former player actively involved with women's athletics within the Delaware community
The Delaware Diamond Extravaganza will also feature a silent auction.
