Dover, Del. (Apr. 27, 2018) --- Mercer scored the first 10 goals and never looked back in a 23-2 victory over Delaware State in the Hornets’ 2018 finale Friday.
A total of 14 players scored for the Bears, led by Kate Leone, Catlin Smith and Eva Thorn with three goals each. Smith also tallied three assists to lead all players with six points in the contest. Mercer’s Lindsey Zeltwanger scored two goals and assisted on three others in a five-point performance.
Thorn scored the first two goals and Zeltwanger tallied her first of the game to give the Bears a 3-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest.
Mercer opened up a 10-0 advantage when Leone assisted on a goal by Katherine Ryan at the 11:57 mark of the first period.
Delaware State answered with its first goal on a shot by Olivia Summerville with 9:36 to go before the half. The goal was the 13th of the season for Summerville, who ended the year as second on the Hornets in goals (13) and points (15).
The Bears led 11-1 when Jasmine West scored DSU’s second goal of the game with 5:42 left in the opening period.
Mercer led 13-2 at the half and outscored the Hornets 10-0 in the final 30 minutes.
Delaware State goal keeper Kayla Hines, playing in her first game, recorded 10 saves.
