Conway, S.C. (Apr. 15, 2017) --- Delaware State scored the first goal of the game, but surrendered the next 10 en route to 24-6 Atlantic Sun loss to Coastal Carolina in the Hornets’ final 2017 road contest.
Keri White had a game-high six goals, while Courtney Genovese, Sarah Mcevoy tallied three each to lead the Chanticleers. CCU’s Maggie Carr had a goal and a game-high six assists to lead all players with seven points in the contest.
A total of 14 Coastal Carolina players scored in the game.
Iman Hassan led Delaware State with three goals to raise her team-best total to 15 this season and 46 for her career. She needs three goals to become the school’s career scoring leader.
Delaware State was the first team to score. Olivia Summerville notched her second goal of the season on a free position shot a-minute-39-seconds into the contest.
Coastal Carolina tied the game less than a minute later and scored the next nine goals to take control of the game. Genovese capped off the rally with her third goal of the contest to give the Chanticleers a 10-1 lead at the 18:28 mark of the first period.
Delaware State broke the Coastal Carolina run when Hassan tallied her first goal of the game with 17:10 left in the opening period.
The Hornets scored twice more in the period, including Hassan’s second of the game with six seconds left to cut Coastal’s lead to 16-4 at the break.
Delaware State scored its fifth goal just 13 seconds into the second period on a shot by Brionna Watkins off a feed from Tai Galmore to cut the Chanticleers’ lead to 16-5.
The Hornets were outscored 8-1 the rest of the second period.
Delaware State will wrap up its 2017 schedule with three home games, beginning with a visit by Central Michigan on Fri. (Apr. 21). Game time is 5:00 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
The Hornets will also host Detroit Mercy on Apr. 23 (11:00 a.m.) and wrap up the season at home against Old Dominion on Apr. 29 (12:00 p.m.).
