PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Competing at arguably the largest track and field meet in the country, the Delaware State University men's 4x400 relay squad took home the gold in the IC4A race at this past weekend's 118th Annual Penn Relay Carnival, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania at historic Franklin Field.
The Hornets finished first with a time of 3:08.69 in the IC4A race on Saturday with junior Ryan Carter (Wilmington, Del.), senior Donte' Holmes (Hyattsville, Md.), junior Stephen Bowe and senior Tariq Devore (New York, N.Y.). In the heats, DSU finished 11th with a time of 3:11.20. Members of that squad included junior Tyquan Brown (Neptune, N.J.), Carter, Devore and Bowe.
The Del State men also finished fourth in the Sprint Medley Relay with Carter, junior Edward Hurley (Virginia Beach, Va.), Devore and Holmes running a time of 3:24.51.
Wrapping up the running events for DSU this past weekend was junior Kevaughn Laviea (Dover, Del.), who ran a 54.89 in the 400m hurdles. His time was good for 37th place overall.
The Hornets also had two male student-athletes compete in field events as freshman Amir Armstrong (Sicklerville, N.J.) finished ninth in the triple jump with a distance of 14.13m and sophomore Marko Kano (Cottbus, Germany) was 21st in the javelin throw with a distance of 52.93m.
On the women's side, sophomore Maria Gwengi (Middletown, Del.) threw a distance of 12.40m in the shot put, good for 24th overall.
In the 400m hurdles, senior Tracey Fan Fan (Maplewood, N.J.) finished 40th with a time of 1:02.62.
The Sprint Medley relay team of Fan Fan, senior Ayanna Kelly (Atlanta, Ga.), junior Dashera Richardson (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore Ketsia Dornevil (Philadelphia, Pa.) placed 20th overall with a time of 4:03.81. The quartet also finished 40th in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:47.82.
There was no team scoring at the event.
The Hornets travel to Greensboro, N.C. for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championships, taking place this Thursday through Saturday.
