Baltimore, Md. (Nov. 13, 2018) --- Loyola Maryland shot nearly 53 percent in a 56-point second half to defeat Delaware State 91-62 at Reitz Arena Tuesday evening. The Hornets only trailed 35-29 at the half, but were outscored 56-33 in the final 20 minutes.
Chuck Champion led three Greyhounds in double figures with 15 points. James Five added 14 points on three-of-four shooting from the field, each from three-point range, and five free throws on six attempts.
Loyola’s Andrew Kostecka chipped in with 13 points.
Saleick Edwards was Delaware State’s high-scorer with 16 points. DSU freshman Fahim Jenneto added 11 points and six rebounds, while Pinky Wiley had eight points and a game-high five assists for the Hornets.
Edwards is averaging a team-high 16.3 points to lead the Hornets through the first three games.
Loyola led 18-10 after five minutes before DSU made a run to grab the lead. Ameer Bennett capped off the 9-0 run with two free throws to give the Hornets a 19-18 lead with 10:19 left in the first half. Four different Delaware State players scored during the run, including Edwards with a three-pointer.
The teams traded baskets for the next few possessions before Jenneto gave the Hornets their final lead, 24-23, on a free throw at the 7:05 mark of the first half.
Loyola (1-2) outscored DSU 12-5 the rest of the half to hold a six-point lead at the break.
The Hornets only trailed 40-35 after Edwards nailed his second three-pointer at the 15:26 mark of the second half, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way.
The Greyhounds used an 11-0 run midway through the second half to take control of the game. Chuck Champion ended the run with two free throws to give Loyola a 63-42 lead with 7:49 left to play.
The Hornets could get no closer than 19 points the rest of the way.
Delaware State hit just 8-of-33 second half shots (24.2%) to fall to 27.4 percent for the game (17-for-62). The Hornets were also outrebounded 51-38.
DSU (0-3) will wrap-up its season opening four-game road swing with a visit to Longwood on Friday (Nov. 16). Game time is 7:00 p.m. in Longwood, Va.
The Hornets will play their home opener on Nov. 19 at 7:00 p.m. against the College of St. Elizabeth’s.
