Dallas, Tex. (Dec. 4, 2016) --- Delaware State again held a second half lead, but faltered down the stretch in a 74-60 loss to SMU at Moody Coliseum today.
The Hornets trailed 32-30 at the break, but pulled ahead 33-32 on a three-point shot by Devin Morgan with 18:55 left to play.
After SMU opened up a 39-36 lead, Morgan nailed another three-ball to tie the score at the 16:20 mark of the second half.
The Hornets held their last lead, 41-40, on a follow-up basket by Mrdjan Gasevic with 15:29 remaining.
The Mustangs answered with a 10-1 run, and opened up a 50-42 lead after Semi Ojeleye hit two free throws with 12:43 left.
SMU led 50-44 before scoring 10 unanswered points to pull ahead 60-44. The Mustangs led by as many as 22 points down the stretch.
Ben Moore led four SMU players in double figures with 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field. He also pulled down 11 rebounds.
Sterling Brown also had a double-double for the Mustangs, tallying 11 points (8-9 FTs) and a game-high 13 boards.
Morgan led all players with 23 points for the Hornets, his second 20-point game in the last three. He also tied his career-best with five three-point field goals (5-9), and was 4-4 at the free throw line.
Morgan has moved into a tie with Kavon Waller for the team lead with 23 three-pointers this season.
Kavon Waller and Mrdjan Gasevic added 10 points each for the Hornets. Waller’s performance included three three-point field goals, while Gasevic notched a season-high point total in the game.
Delaware State was 21-for-51 from the field (41.2%), including 9-of-22 on three-point shots (40.9%). The Mustangs hit on 25 of their 53 shots (47.2%) and 7-of-22 (31.8%) from beyond the arc.
The Hornets were outrebounded 42-21 in the contest.
DSU dropped its second game in the row to fall to 2-7, while SMU won its second straight to improve to 6-3.
The Hornets will wrap up their two-game Texas swing at North Texas on Thursday (Dec. 8). Game time is 9 p.m. Eastern in Dallas, Tex.
