Dover, DE --- Delaware State and North Carolina A&T combined for 12 home runs during a doubleheader split at Soldier Field on Saturday.


Delaware State won the first game 11-7, while the Aggies took the nightcap 9-4.


In the opener, Justin Bittner hit a grand slam to highlight a six-run seventh inning for the Hornets.


Delaware State trailed 6-3 before Randy Boyer hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to pull the Hornets to within a run.


The Hornets tied the game when Jarrett Bibb drew a bases loaded walk in the seventh. Two batters later, Bittner hit the first pitch from North Carolina A&T reliever Jody Calloway over the fence in left center for a grand slam to give DSU a 10-6 lead. It was Bittner’s first homer of the season. Tom Shelly doubled in the Hornets’ final run later in the inning.


North Carolina A&T hit five home runs in the first six innings to open up a 6-3 lead. Kory Kinnear had two solo shots for the Aggies.


The Hornets jumped out in front 3-0 when Brandon Gravely doubled in a run and Wynton Weather doubled in two in the first inning. 


Shelly was 4-for-5 with a run batted in, while Bittner was 2-for-4.  


Dan Perkins (3-3) pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief to earn the win for the Hornets.


In game two, Charlie Gamble hit a pair of two-run homers and added a sacrifice fly to lead the Aggies.


Gamble hit a homer in the bottom of the first to give NCA&T a 2-0 lead. The Aggies scored four runs in the third, highlighted by another Gamble two-run blast, to open up a 6-0 lead.


The Hornets scored a run in the bottom of the third on a bases loaded single by Shelly to pull to within 6-1. The Aggies pulled an inning-ending double play on the next batter to avoid further damage.


North Carolina A&T went ahead 7-1 on a solo homer by Nelson Santos in the fourth.


The Aggies led 9-2 when Bittner and Eric Allen hit solo homers in the seventh for the Hornets. Allen’s shot was his team-leading eighth of the season.


Tim Johnson (3-3) pitched a complete game for NCA&T. He allowed five hits while striking out nine.


Jamie Friel (3-3) suffered the loss for Delaware State.


The split leaves the Hornets with a 20-19-2 overall record and 9-5 mark in the MEAC. North Carolina A&T is 17-27 overall and 8-6 in league play.


The teams will wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Soldier Field.
