Norfolk, Va. (Apr. 28, 2019) --- Caleb Ward singled in the game-winning run with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Norfolk State a 3-2 win over Delaware State in the finale of a three-game MEAC North series at Marty Miller Field today. The Hornets took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 10th before the Spartans rallied in the bottom half of the inning.
The loss overshadowed a dominant performance by DSU starting pitcher Darnell Maisonet, who allowed just six hits and one run, while striking out a season-high 11 in the first nine innings. Maisonet was relieved by Austin Warrington in the bottom of the 10th inning.
The Hornets opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. John Weglarz tripled with one out in the opening inning and scored the game’s first run on a ground out by Miguel Rivera.
Norfolk State tied the game with a run off Maisonet in the bottom of the third.
The score remain tied at one till the Delaware State 10th.
Mark Herron singled to lead off the Hornet 10th and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Adrian Hill. Herron moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single by Weglarz to give the Hornets a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the 10th, Norfolk State scored the tying run on a one-out bases loaded single by Alsander Womack. Ward followed with a single off Hornet reliever Robert Shorts to drive in the winning run.
Warrington (1-5) was tagged with the loss for the Hornets, while NSU reliever Seth Hockett (1-1) threw one inning to earn the win.
Weglarz was three-for-five at the plate, while Hill and Rivera had two hits each for the Hornets, who outhit the Spartans 10-9.
Norfolk State won two of the three games in the series to improve to 19-21 overall and 14-7 in the MEAC. The Hornets fell to 14-23 and 9-12.
DSU returns to action with a three-game series at home against Coppin State to close out its 2019 MEAC schedule next weekend. The Hornets and Spartans will play single games next Fri. (3:00 pm), Sat. (2:00 pm) and Sun, (1:00 pm) at Soldier Field.
