Princess Anne, Md. (Apr. 2, 2017) --- Delaware State managed just three runs and 11 hits in a MEAC doubleheader loss to Maryland-Eastern Shore today. The Hawks won the first game 8-1 and completed the sweep with a 3-2 victory in the seven-inning nightcap.
In the opener, MDES starter Zach Mills held the Hornets to one on two hits, while striking out 11 to earn the win (1-1).
Jordan Wesley was 3-for-4 with a run batted in and Jamison Trower drove in two runs to lead the Hawks.
Delaware State trailed 6-0 before scoring its lone run on a one out single by Evan Regez in the eighth. Ciaran Devenney had a double for the Hornets’ only extra base hit of the game.
DSU starter Garrett Lawson (2-3) allowed six hits and five runs, four earned, in 5.2 innings to take the loss.
In the nightcap, MDES scored a run in the fourth to snap a 2-2 tie and its bullpen pitched 4.1 scoreless innings to preserve the win.
Delaware State opened the game two scoring with a run in the second. Jared Gillis singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jaylen Zielecki followed with a double to score Gillis with the game’s first run.
The Hornets added a run in the third on a sac fly by Devenney. Regez drew a one out walk and scored on the fly ball to give DSU a 2-0 lead.
MDES tied the game with two runs in the bottom off the third off Hornet starter Sean McGrath. The Hawks took the lead in the fourth on a one-out single by Derek Schoff.
The Hornets had the potential tying run on second with one out in the seventh, but failed to get it in.
Gillis had two of DSU’s six hits in the game. Travis Dill pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Hornets.
Delaware State dropped two of the three games in the series to fall to 4-5 in the MEAC (8-14 overall). MDES improved to 3-6 in the MEAC (5-21 overall).
Delaware State is back in action on Wednesday at La Salle. Game time is 3:00 p.m. in Philadelphia.
The Hornets return to MEAC action with a three-game series at home against Norfolk State next weekend.
