Norfolk, Va. (May 18, 2012) --- Delaware State took out its frustrations from a loss earlier in the day on North Carolina Central, pounding the Eagles 16-2 in a MEAC Tournament elimination game at Marty Miller Field this evening. The Hornets stay alive in the tournament with the win. DSU will face North Carolina A&T in another elimination contest on Saturday afternoon.
The top-seeded Hornets, who suffered a heartbreaking 7-6 loss to UMES earlier in the day, pounded out 19 hits on four NCCU pitchers.
Delaware State scored six runs in the fourth inning and plated seven in the sixth to blow the game open. Six DSU players had at least two hits. Eight Hornets hit safely in the contest.
Catcher Eddie Sorondo was 4-for-4 with four runs batted in, while JP Frey had three hits (3-for-3) and a RBI. Ryan Haas had two hits (2-for-4) and drove in three runs.
North Carolina Central opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning.
Delaware State evened the score on a run-scoring single by Tony Gatto in the second.
The Hornets pulled ahead when Sorondo doubled in two runs in the third to give the Hornets a 3-1 lead. .
DSU's six-run fourth inning was highlighted by a three-run double by Haas. Sorondo and Aaron Nardone also had run-scoring hits in the fourth.
Cecil had a two-run single and Sorondo drove in his fourth run of the game in the sixth.
Zach Adkins (8-1) allowed four hits and two runs, one earned, in the complete game win.
The game was called after NCCU batted in the seventh due to the 10-run rule.
If the Hornets defeat NCA&T on Saturday, they will face the loser of the Bethune-Cookman/UMES winner's bracket contest later in the day.
