Glen Burnie, Md. (Apr. 15, 2012) --- Delaware State scored seven runs in the sixth inning en route to an 8-3 win over Coppin State at Joe Cannon Field today.

The Hornets swept the three-game series to improve to 21-14-1 overall. DSU leads the MEAC North with an 11-1 mark in league play.

Ryan Haas and Troy Drummond drove in two runs each, and starter Zach Adkins allowed two runs while striking out six in five innings to earn his fourth win of the season (4-1).

Coppin State opened the scoring with a run off Adkins in the bottom of the first inning.

The Hornets answered with a run in the top of the second on a lead-off homer by Aaron Nardone to tie the game. Nardone leads DSU with three homers this season.

The Eagles regained the lead 2-1 with a run in the fourth.

Delaware State took control of the game in the sixth. The Hornets sent 11 batters to the plate, scoring seven runs on four hits. DSU was also aided by two Coppin State errors in the inning.

Nardone singled to lead off the inning. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tony Gatto and moved to third when Joey Babuca reached base on an error. Drummond followed with a triple to center, scoring Nardone and Babuca to give the Hornets a 3-2 lead. DSU opened up a 4-2 lead when Drummond scored on a bunt single by Cameron Cecil. Haas followed with a two-run double to give the Hornets a 6-2 lead.

Delaware State closed out the seventh inning scoring with two runs on a Coppin State error.

The Hornets had eight hits in the contest. Cecil, Haas and Nardone led the way with two hits each.

The DSU bullpen allowed five hits and an unearned run in four innings of work.

The Hornets return to action on Wednesday (Apr. 18) at Navy. Game time is 4:00 p.m. in Annapolis, Md.
