HORNETS DROP SECOND STRAIGHT TO PIRATES

Greenville, N.C. (May 14, 2011) --- The Delaware State University baseball team dropped its second in a row to East Carolina 7-1 at Clark-Leclair Field this afternoon. The Hornets fell to 24-26 this season, while the Pirates improved to 33-17.

Phillip Clark was 2-for-5 with a homer and two runs batted in to lead the Pirates.

Delaware State scored first when Ryan Hass hit a solo homer with two out in the bottom of the first off winning pitcher Seth Maness (7-3). Haas had two of DSU's six hits. Jose Portela and Aaron Nardone also two hits for the Hornets.

East Carolina pulled ahead with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Clark hit a two run homer off DSU reliever Josh Patman in the fourth to give the Pirates a 4-1 lead.   

ECU added a run in the fifth and two more in the eighth to close out the scoring.

Delaware State starter Elliot Gardner (4-7) suffered the loss, despite a solid effort. Gardner allowed six hits and two runs, while striking out three in six innings.

The teams will wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. It will also mark the final regular season game for the Hornets.
