Phila., Pa. (Apr. 20, 2011) --- Delaware State overcame a 5-0 deficit en route to a 9-5 win over La Salle at Hank DeVincent Field this afternoon.
The Hornets began their comeback with four runs in the sixth inning. Justin Allen singled to lead off the inning. Allen advanced to second on a groundout by Keith Hernandez and moved to third on a single by Scott Davis. After a walk to Ryan Haas loaded the bases, Aaron Nardone chased everyone home with a triple to left center to cut the Explorers' lead to 5-3. The Hornets pulled to within 5-4 when Nardone scored on fly ball by Tony Gatto that was booted by La Salle left fielder Brendon Norton.
After La Salle failed to score in the bottom of the sixth, Delaware State pulled ahead with two runs in the seventh inning. Cameron Cecil walked to lead off the seventh and was sacrificed to second by Troy Drummond. Hernandez followed with a single to score Cecil and tie the game at 5-5. Hernandez advanced to second on a wild pitch and sped home on an infield single by Haas to give the Hornets a 6-5 lead.
Delaware State added a run in the eighth when Gatto walked to lead off the inning and later scored on a La Salle error.
The Hornets put two insurance runs on the board in the ninth inning. Haas tripled in Davis with the first run of the inning and Nardone collected his fourth RBI of the game on a grounder to score Haas and give DSU a 9-5 lead.
Hernandez and Haas had two hits each for the Hornets.
Delaware State's bullpen shutout La Salle on three hits over the last five innings. Derek Marshallsea, Tommy Dill, Chad Sturgeon, Jose Portela and Gatto each pitched a scoreless inning out of the pen for the Hornets. Dill (4-1) was credited with the win.
The Hornets have won three of their last four games to improve to 18-18 this season. La Salle fell to 20-15.
DSU returns to action with a three-game series at MEAC rival Norfolk State this weekend. The series begins with a single game on Friday (Apr. 22) and concludes with a doubleheader on Saturday (Apr. 23) at Marty Miller Field in Norfolk, Va.
