Dover, Del. (May 16, 2010) --- New Mexico scored 11 runs in its last two at-bats in a 16-5 win over Delaware State in Albuquerque, N.M., today. The Lobos led 5-3 before tallying six runs in the seventh inning and five in the eighth.
New Mexico swept the three-game series to improve to 34-17 on the season. The Hornets fell to 12-34.
The Lobos pounded out 20 hits. Ben Woodchick was 5-for-6 with three runs batted in, while Justin Howard had four hits and four RBI in five at bats. Howard 12 for 14 in the series.
Delaware State opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. Scott Davis and Keith Hernandez led off the game with singles for the Hornets. Each moved up a base on a wild pitch. Davis scored on a ground out by Abe Eubank and Hernandez came home when Tony Gatto grounded out to short.
New Mexico scored a run in the bottom of the first, and added two in the third to take a 3-2 lead.
The Hornets put their first three men on base in the top of the fourth, but managed just one run, on a double play grounder by Joey Babuca, to tie the game at 3-3.
The Lobos scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to open up a 5-3 lead.
Davis singled in a run in the eighth and Brandon Crist had a run-scoring single in the ninth for the Hornets.
The Hornets had 16 hits, but left 11 men on base.
Crist was 4-for-5 at the plate, while Eubank had three hits in five at bats.
Delaware State will return to action this Thursday against Norfolk State in the opening round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla.
