Dover, Del. (May 10, 2013) --- The Delaware State University baseball team improved to 33-13 this season after a 6-3 win over Fairleigh Dickinson at Soldier Field today. Starting pitcher Jordan Elliott threw six solid innings, while Ryan Haas and Hassan Evans drove in two runs each to lead the Hornets.
Elliott allowed five hits and two runs, while striking out six, to improve to 9-1 this season. The Lincoln, Del., native also raised his school record win total to 28 (28-12).
Reliever D.J. Miller allowed an unearned run in the seventh inning and Elliott Gardner retired all six batters he faced in the eighth and ninth innings to earn the save.
The Hornets scored first with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Aaron Nardone singled with one out in the second and later scored on a single by Evans to give DSU a 1-0 lead.
Fairleigh Dickinson scored two runs off Elliott in the top of the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead.
Delaware State answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead. Justin Allen singled in the first run of the inning to tie the game at 2-2. The Hornets took a 3-2 lead on a sacrifice fly by Cameron Cecil and stretched the lead to 4-2 on a two-out bases loaded walk to Haas.
The Knights (11-33) scored an unearned run in the seventh to pull to within 4-3.
Evans singled in his second run of the game in the bottom of the seventh and Haas had a run-scoring single in the eighth to close out the scoring.
The Hornets outhit the Knights 13-7. Five DSU players had two hits each.
The teams will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon. The Hornets will honor their 2013 seniors during a pre-game ceremony at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
