Norfolk, Va. (Apr. 27, 2013) ---  Delaware State captured its second straight MEAC North title and a No. 1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament with a 6-1 victory over Norfolk State in game one of a doubleheader at Marty Miller Field today. The Hornets earned a sweep of the twin-bill with an 8-4 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, Jordan Elliott won his school-record 26th game to improve to 7-1 this season. Elliott allowed five hits and one run, while striking out five, to stand at 26-12 in his career. He surpassed Tim Vaillancourt (2001-03) as the Hornets’ career leader in pitching wins.

J.P. Frey was four-for-five and Hassan Evans had three hits in four at bats to lead DSU’s 17-hit attack.

Delaware State opened the scoring with a run in the top of the second inning. Aaron Nardone tripled to lead off the inning and scored the game’s first run on a groundout by Eddie Sorondo.

The Hornets scored a run in the third to open up a 2-0 lead. Mike Alexander was hit by a pitch and stole second in the inning. Two batters later, he scored on Nardone’s single to center.

Norfolk State scored a run off Elliott in the seventh to cut the Hornets’ lead to 2-1.

Delaware State got some breathing room with four runs in the ninth inning. Cameron Onderko singled to lead off the ninth. He scored the first run of the inning on a single by Alexander. Evans had a run-scoring single and Ryan Haas drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the inning. The Hornets also scored a ninth inning run on a steal of home by Frey.       

Zach Candeloro and Derek Marshallsea each pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the Hornets in the opener.

In the seven-inning nightcap, Nardone was 4-for-5 with three runs batted in, while Frey had three hits in five at bats to go 7-for-10 in the doubleheader.

Delaware State scored a run in the first inning to open the scoring. Frey started the rally with a one-out single and later scored on a two-out hit by Nardone.

The Hornets second inning runs on a Norfolk State error and sacrifice fly by Alexander to open up a 3-0 lead.

Nardone singled in two runs in the fourth to give DSU a 5-0 lead.

Norfolk State scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Hornets lead to 5-3.

Delaware State stretched its lead to 6-3 on a run in the fifth. Nick Arrue had a one-out double and scored the run when Cameron Onderko followed with a single to right.

 The Spartans matched the Hornets with a run in the fifth to pull to within 6-4.

DSU added two insurance runs in the ninth. Nick Arrue singled in the first run and the second crossed the plate on a Norfolk State error.

George Michael (5-1) pitched a scoreless inning in relief to earn the win in the nightcap.

The doubleheader sweep gives the Hornets a 29-12 overall record and 18-2 mark in the MEAC.

The teams will wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
