Dover, Del. (Apr. 13, 2013) --- Delaware State blew open a tight game with seven runs in the eighth inning en route to a 10-2 MEAC North win over Coppin State at Soldier Field today.

The score was 3-2 before DSU’s eighth inning explosion. The Hornets sent 13 batters to the plate and collected 10 hits in the frame.

J.P. Frey singled in the first two runs in the eighth to give the Hornets a 5-2 lead. Ryan Haas doubled in a run, while Hassan Evans and D.J. Miller had run-scoring singles in the inning.

Coppin State opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first off Delaware State starter Jordan Elliott.

The Hornets responded with three runs in the bottom of the first.  Evans singled in a run and Haas produced a run on a sacrifice fly in the first.

Evans was 3-for-4 with two runs batted in, while Frey had three hits and two RBI in six at bats. Miller, Aaron Nardone and Cameron Onderko chipped in two hits each for the Hornets.

Elliott allowed five hits and two runs, while striking out seven, to improve to 5-1 this season. His earned run average fell to 2.89 after the complete game effort.  The Lincoln, Del., native now has 24 wins at DSU (24-12). Tim Vaillancourt (2000-03) is the Hornets' career leader with 25 wins.

Delaware State is now 22-10 overall and sits in first place in the MEAC with an 11-2 mark in league games.

The Hornets and Eagles will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon.
