Dover, Del. (Mar. 1, 2013) --- Jordan Elliott tossed a four-hit complete game and Nick Arrue drove in three runs to lead Delaware State to an 8-1 win over Niagara in the Hornets' 2013 home opener at Soldier Field today.

The Hornets won for the fifth time in the last six games to improve to 5-3 this season. The Purple Eagles fell to 1-7.

Elliott allowed four hits and one run, while striking out seven, to notch his first win of the season (1-0). He did not allow a hit until Niagara's Greg Rogers led off the fifth inning with a home run. It was the first hit allowed by Elliott through nine innings of work at that point in the season. The former Milford (Del.) High School star threw five hitless innings in his debut against Winthrop on Feb. 21.

Elliott has 14 strikeouts and a 0.64 earned run average in 14 innings this season.  The win was his 20th at DSU (20-11). Tim Vaillancourt (2000-03) is DSU's career leader with 25 wins.

Arrue was 2-for-3 with a double, while Justin Allen, Aaron Nardone and Mike Alexander also had two hits for the Hornets. DSU tied its season high with 12 base knocks in the contest.

Delaware State opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Ryan Haas drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly and Nadone had a run-scoring double in the inning.

Delaware State led 3-1 when Arrue doubled in two runs in the sixth to give the Hornets a four-run lead.  He also singled in a run in DSU's three-run seventh inning.

Allen also had a two-run single in the seventh.

Delaware State and Niagara will also play single games on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) and Sunday (1:0 p.m.) at Soldier Field.
