Norfolk, Va. (Nov. 10, 2019) --- The Delaware State volleyball team led 2-0 before fighting off a late charge by Norfolk State to defeat the Spartans 3-2 in a MEAC match this afternoon.
The Hornets’ win, coupled with a loss by Maryland-Eastern Shore at Howard today, moves DSU back into a tie with MDES for fourth place in the MEAC Northern Division standings, although the Hawks hold the tie-breaker.
The top four teams in the final regular season division standings qualify for the post-season MEAC championship tournament later this month.
In today’s Norfolk State match, the Hornets took the opening set 25-23, and opened up a 2-0 lead with a 25-16 victory in the second set.
The Spartans stayed alive in the match with a 25-14 win in set three, and evened the contest by winning 25-18 in the fourth set.
Delaware State won the deciding fifth set 15-10 to sweep the season series from the Spartans and improve to 11-17 overall and 6-7 in the MEAC. Norfolk State fell to 1-22 and 1-12.
Ryanne Burnett (fr.), Jordan Vang (fr.) and Sydney Lewis (fr.) led Delaware State with 11 kills each, while Mayah Ngundam tallied nine. Burnett also tallied 14 digs to record her third “double-double” of the season. Lewis also tallied five blocks.
DSU’s Freja Gortz (fr.) led all players with 46 assists, while teammate Jasmal Cruz (fr.) had a match-high 23 digs, marking the sixth time she has reached 20-or-more this year.
Cruz also topped all players with four service aces in the match.
The Hornets collected 12 aces to 4 for Norfolk State. DSU was second in the MEAC in aces at 1.83 per set entering this weekend’s action.
Delaware State had 55 kills and 28 errors on 161 attacks for a .168 hitting percentage in the match. Norfolk State posted a .230 attack percentage, recording 56 kills and 22 errors in 148 attempts.
The Hornets will close out the 2019 regular season with two home matches, beginning with a visit by Coppin State on Friday (Nov. 15) at 4:00 p.m. DSU will host Morgan State next Sunday (Nov. 17) at 2:00 p.m.
