Princess Anne, Md. (Oct. 15, 2019) --- Playing its third match in three nights, the Delaware State volleyball team ran out of gas in  3-1 loss to Maryland Eastern Shore in a MEAC contest Tuesday evening. The Hornets won the first set 27-25, but the Hawks rebounded to take the next three 25-17, 25-23 and 25-14.

Tatjana Trifkovic had 18 kills, while Ivana Blazevic recorded 42 assists, each match highs, to lead the Hawks.

Sydney Lewis (fr.) was tops on the Hornets with 10 kills. Freja Gortz had a team-high 22 assists, while Jordan Vang led the team with 10 digs.

In the opening set, Delaware State (8-13; 3-3 MEAC) opened up its biggest lead, 18-13, on a kill by Anadys Valentin (fr.). The Hornets were a point away from winning the set after a service error by the Hawks gave DSU a 24-22 advantage.

MDES (8-13; 3-3- MEAC) scored the next two points to force a 24-24 tie.

The Hornets led 25-24 and 26-25 before winning the set on an ace by Ryanne Burnett (fr.).

The Hawks controlled most of the second set, leading by as many as eight points. MDES had a .382 hitting percentage in the second set (18 kills/5 errors/34 attacks), compared to .037 for the Hornets (7/6/27).

Maryland Eastern Shore opened up a 2-1 lead in the match with a come-from-behind victory in set three. The Hornets were in control early in the set, opening up a 14-8 lead on a kill by Vang. The Hawks responded by scoring 11 of the next 13 points, and pulled ahead 19-16 on a service ace by Anica Jestratijevic. The score was tied at 21 and 22 before the Hawks scored three of the last four points to claim the win.

In the fourth set, the score was 5-5 before MDES pulled away. The Hawks opened up a 15-9 lead on a DSU error, and was ahead by 11 points on two occasions in the set.

Maryland-Eastern Shore had 57 kills and 22 errors in 127 attacks for a .276 hitting percentage in the match. The Hornets posted a .170 attack percentage, tallying 38 kills and 20 errors on 106 attempts.

DSU will also be on the road for its next two matches, beginning with a MEAC contest at North Carolina Central on Friday (Oct. 18). The Hornets will also visit North Carolina A&T on Oct. 20 before returning home on the Oct. 25 to face Bethune-Cookman.
