Dover, Del. (Aug. 25, 2018) --- Delaware State wrapped up its competition at the season opening James Madison Tropical Smoothie Invitational with 3-0 losses to host JMU and Fairfield today.

James Madison defeated the Hornets 25-8, 25-14 and 25-12, while the scores of the Fairfield contest were 25-15, 25-15 and 25-17.

M’Kaela White led a balanced James Madison attack with eight kills, while teammate Sarah Martin had a match-high 15 assists.

Freshman Devin Ruble led the Hornets with five assists and tied for match-high honors with 10 digs.

James Madison posted a .346 hitting percentage, tallying 37 kills and only 10 errors on 78 attacks. Delaware State recorded 19 kills and 23 errors on 83 attempts for a -.048 percentage.

In the Fairfield match, Laura Seeger topped all players with 16 kills for the Staggs.

Delaware State’s performance was highlighted by the play of Kiera Holtzclaw (so.), who led the Hornets with eight assists. Holtzclaw had just one error on 11 attempts for a .636 attack percentage in the match.

Freshman Sydney Sheppard led DSU with a season-high 14 assists, while Mia Taula led the Hornets with 10 digs in the Fairfield contest.

Delaware State returns to action at the St. Francis Brooklyn Tournament next weekend. The Hornets are scheduled to face Cal State Fullerton (Aug. 31), Bucknell (Aug. 31), NJIT (Sep. 1 and host St. Francis Brooklyn (Sep. 1) in the tournament.
