Norfolk, Va. (Oct. 22, 2017) --- Delaware State posted a 3-1 MEAC North victory over Norfolk State today, completing a season sweep of the Spartans. The Hornets won the first two sets, 25-22 and 25-15. NSU stayed alive in the contest with a 25-20 victory in the third set, but Delaware State took set four 25-22 to win the match.
The Hornets won for the second time in three matches to improve to 3-4 in the MEAC.
Delaware State had a season-high .192 attack percentage in the match, tallying 46 kills and just 22 errors on 125 attempts.
Senior Sabina Szmajduch recorded her second double-double in the last three contests, leading the Hornets with 14 kills. She also contributed 14 digs to the win, raising her season total to five matches with double-figures in kills and digs.
Freshman Mayah Ngundam had a career-high 12 kills, while Gabriella Enriquez (sr.) and Taula Leimaluhia (jr.) led all players with 15 digs each. Leimaluhia tied her career-best in the match, and has reached double figures in digs in three of the last four contests.
Enriquez also had a match-high 40 assists to bring her Delaware State career total to 978.
The Hornets had a .276 attack percentage in the first set, posting 12 kills on 29 attempts. Leimaluhia led the defensive effort with seven digs in the opening set.
Szmajduch led DSU with four kills, while the Hornets benefited from 11 Norfolk State errors in their set two win.
Delaware State had 15 kills and only four errors on 31 attempts for a .355 attack percentage en route to the win in the fourth set. Szmajduch and NaKia Jones (sr.) led the Hornets with four kills in the set.
DSU will play its next three matches at home, beginning with a visit by defending MEAC champ Howard on Oct. 29. The contest begins at 3 p.m. in Memorial Hall. The Hornets will also host Coppin State (Nov. 3) and Morgan State (Nov. 5) during the homestand.
