THE GAME
The new year also marks the beginning of 2017-18 MEAC competition for Delaware State. The Lady Hornets begin a three-game MEAC homestand against the North Carolina Central Lady Eagles in a battle of teams looking to end recent slides. DSU brings an eight-game losing streak into the contest. The Lady Hornets are coming off a 58-43 loss to Stetson in the consolation game of the Florida Atlantic University Holiday Classic on Dec. 30 in Boca Raton, Fla. DSU led by six points and two occasions in the first quarter and held a 16-12 advantage after the first 10 minutes of the game. The Lady Hornets were held to just six points in the second quarter and had to settle for 22-22 tie at the half. DSU only trailed 35-34 late in the third quarter, but was outscored 23-9 the rest of the way.  Arion Jackson, playing in her third game since missing the previous five due to injury, led the Lady Hornets with 12 points and tied her season-high with seven rebounds in the game.  Lanayjha Ashe added 10 points, while Keke Barber was tops on the team with eight rebounds in the contest. Delaware State has played the last six game without 2017-18 MEAC Preseason Player-of-the-Year NaJai Pollard due to a knee injury. Pollard was tops in the league in scoring and 10th in rebounding when she went down three minutes into the Lady Hornets’ contest against Robert Morris on Dec. 6. Ashe is averaging 10.5 points per game and leads DSU with 42 assists. Barber averages 6.2 rebounds per game and is the team leader with 11 three-point field goals.     

NC Central (2-11; 0-0 MEAC) has dropped its last eight games, including a 66-61 decision to South Carolina Upstate in its most recent outing on Dec. 30. Sami Oliver-Alexander led three Lady Eagles in double-figures with 15 points in the game, all on three-point shots (5-for-13). Rodneysha Martin is NCCU’s leading scorer this season at 13.6 points per game. She also a team-high 32 assists. Oliver-Alexander is tied for second on the team in scoring (7.2 ppg) and is tops with 20 three-pointers. Paulina Afriyie also averages 7.2 points per game is the team rebounding leader at 6.4 per game.          

HORNETS vs. EAGLES Series History
This is the first of two scheduled meetings between the teams this season. The Lady Hornets and Lady Eagles split two meetings last season with each team winning on its home court. NCCU won the first 2016-17 contest 68-63 in Durham, N.C. Delaware State bounced back to win the second meeting 55-51 in Memorial Hall. The Lady Hornets have won two of the last three meetings between the teams to hold a 4-3 series lead.
