Delaware State University equestrian joins the family of Kera Russum in announcing the death of the inaugural Hornet team member.
Russum died September 27, 2017 at age 32 due to complications from Lupus.
The Dover, Del., native was a founding member of the Delaware State equestrian team in 2006. She enrolled at DSU in 2005 and graduated with a degree in Psychology in 2009, in addition to earning a MBA from Wilmington University.
Russum was a member of the Hornets’ Hunt Seat (English) squad and served as a captain for the three years she was on the team. As a senior in 2009, she helped lead the Hornets to their first national championship tournament appearance.
Kera is survived by her parents, John and Carla Russum of Dover; brothers - John Wesley Russum, Jr. of Dover, Shawn Thomas Russum, and Kyle Tyler Russum, both of Smyrna; her nieces and nephews; and a large extended family.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on October 2 in Dover.
Delaware State’s equestrian alumni have announced plans to dedicate a jump in Russum’s honor. The team will hold a ceremony during a home event to unveil the memorial.
