Dover, Del. (May 16, 2017) --- Delaware State pitcher Lane DeLeon (jr.) and catcher Evan Regez (sr.) were named to the 2017 All Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Baseball Second Team, in voting by league head coaches and sports Information representatives announced today.
DeLeon is third in the MEAC with a 2.62 earned run average this season. He's also tied for sixth in the league with 56 strikeouts and is eighth with 16 batters struck out looking. DeLeon is 3-3 with a 2.51 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 46.2 innings vs. conference opponents this year.
Regez is tops on the Hornets with a .333 batting average, highlighted by a .350 mark in MEAC games this season. He has a team-high 48 hits and is tied for the lead with 29 runs scored this year. In addition, he leads the Hornets with five stolen bases (5-for-6).
Norfolk State utility man Alex Mauricio was selected as the 2017 MEAC Player-of-the-Year, while his teammate Devin Hemmerich earned Pitcher-of-the-Year honors.
North Carolina Central second baseman Corey Joyce in the 2017 MEAC Rookie-of-the-Year and Coach-of-the-Year honors go to Ben Hall of North Carolina A&T.
The Hornets did not have any All-MEAC First or Third Team selections.
Delaware State (20-23; 14-10 MEAC) will return to action on Wednesday against Florida A&M (26-24; 14-10 MEAC) in the opening round of the 2017 MEAC Tournament on Wed. (May. 17) in Salisbury, Md. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, home of the minor league Delmarva Shorebirds.
The Delaware State/Florida A&M winner will take on MEAC South champ Bethune-Cookman on Thursday (May 18) at noon. The loser of DSU/FAMU opening round game will face either Maryland-Eastern Shore or North Carolina A&T in an elimination game on Wed. evening.
